Influenced by the music of Hot Club de France, and the French gypsy guitar player Django Reinhardt they formed a quartet with violinist Ivar Brodahl (later replaced by Finn Hauge) that became part of the international renaissance of the gypsy jazz music in the 1980s.
Nakayama's music is introduced as blended world accordion music, Gypsy Jazz, Musette, Tango etc. and her voice is advertised as "miracle voice" by record label.
These include “Rhythm Future Quartet”, a modern Gypsy jazz ensemble featuring guitarists Olli Soikkeli and Vinny Raniolo (of Frank Vignola Trio), and the “New Hot Club of America” an homage to the original Hot Club of France with guitarist Gonzalo Bergara and fellow violinists Ben Powell and Leah Zeger.
In 2006, Kliphuis started combining classical, folk and world music with gypsy jazz and performing regularly outside the jazz world, in classical halls such as the Concertgebouw and folk festivals including Celtic Connections.
