During the July 4th weekend of 1980 Richard Dixon the United States Coast Guard coxswain of a 44 motor lifeboat lead two daring rescues off the Tillamook Bay breakwater, for which he was awarded two Coast Guard Medals.
In August 1928 the boat was declared unfit for service and so a Watson Class motor lifeboat that was intended for Thurso Lifeboat Station, the H.C.J., was stationed at Fowey for a few months until Fowey's own boat, the C.D.E.C., arrived in December.
The Boatswain, Edward F. Racine, was later awarded the Distinguished Service Medal for righting the overturned motor lifeboat, rescuing several other men from the water, and then helping to keep morale up whilst awaiting rescue.
