In Microbiological laboratories, B. anserina bacteria can be grown on special protein enriched mediums (rich in ovoalbumins or animal tissue (that contains Myoglobin)), in anaerobic conditions.
Myoglobin is an oxygen transport protein used in muscles, but is also absent from all icefish skeletal muscles.
Generally however, laboratory values are normal, but if there is a concurrent myocardial infarction (heart attack) or great stress to the heart, laboratory values may show increased cardiac markers like Troponin (I, T), CK-MB, Myoglobin, and LDH1 (Lactase Dehydrogenase isotype 1).
As a consequence, they have thick, dark myoglobin-rich breast muscles adapted for a fast and aerobically strenuous wing-beat cadence, which they can nonetheless maintain for long periods of time.
