DMT1

DMT1 expression is found to be increased in the substantia nigra of Parkinson's patients and in the ventral mesencephalon of animal models intoxicated with 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP) - a neurotoxin widely used experimentally to produce Parkinsonian symptoms.

Omega-atracotoxin

Omega-atracotoxin is an insect-specific neurotoxin of Blue mountains funnel-web spiders whose phylogenetic specificity derives from its ability to antagonise insect, but not vertebrate, voltage-gated calcium channels.

Vibrionaceae

Members of this family also synthesize tetrodotoxin (TTX), an ancient marine alkaloid and powerful neurotoxin (Na+ pump inhibitor, 1 mg can kill an adult) that serves to protect members of an order of fishes, the Tetraodontiformes (tetras-four and odontos-tooth), which include the puffer fish (see fugu, raw puffer fish served in Japan).
