In 2005, Mitchell served as International Spokesperson for Read an eBook Week, during which time, he worked with Michael S. Hart, founder of Project Gutenberg, on a "Brief History of Project Gutenberg".
Their account was reprinted in the United States in 1999, with both the Crafts credited as authors, and it is available online at Project Gutenberg and the University of Virginia.
He is the editor of The Online Books Page, which lists over 1 million books including project Gutenberg titles, all of which are freely available for reading online or by download.
It has been used as a source by many modern projects, including Wikipedia and the Project Gutenberg Encyclopedia.
