In the 2008 Presidential campaign, Tumulty accused the campaign of Senator John McCain of "playing the race card" for a television ad criticizing the connections between Senator Barack Obama and Franklin Raines, the former CEO of Fannie Mae.
Years later, he and two other Louisiana Democrats, U.S. District Judge Adrian Duplantier and former State Treasurer Mary Evelyn Parker, were interviewed for the 2001 book Welfare Racism: Playing the Race Card Against America's Poor.
