Free was born in Red Oak, Oklahoma, and after she graduated from law school she began her legal career by going to work for the United States Department of Justice; she was the youngest attorney ever hired by the DOJ.
Red Oak is a small unincorporated community located along Richland Creek in Buckeye Township, Stephenson County, Illinois.
Red Oak was also the exterior location for filming "True Stories", a film by David Byrne of Talking Heads released in 1986.

On the Janka Scale of Hardness, which measures hardness of woods, lignum vitae ranks highest of the trade woods, with a Janka hardness of 4500 lbf (compared with African Blackwood at 2940 lbf, Hickory at 1820 lbf, red oak at 1290 lbf, Yellow Pine at 690 lbf, and Balsa at 325 lbf).
According to local legend, the town was named for a large red oak tree that was found while trees were being chopped down in order to build houses.
Boxcar Willie was born in the area surrounding Ovilla; the overpass at Interstate 35E and FM 664 in Red Oak is named in his memory.

The majority of the preserve is covered by Texas Live Oak (Quercus fusiformis) and Ashe Juniper (Juniperus ashei)...commonly called "cedar"... woodlands, Live Oak savannah, Texas Red Oak (Quercus buckleyi) woodlands, and open grasslands composed primarily of Sideoats Grama (Bouteloua curtipendula and Little bluestem (Schizachyrium scoparium).
The larvae feed on the leaves of Bitternut Hickory (Carya cordiformis), Butternut (Juglans cinerea), Red Oak (Quercus rubra), White Ash (Fraxinus americana), and hawthorn (Crataegus sp.).
Trigalloyl glucoses can be found in oaks species like the North American white oak (Quercus alba) and European red oak (Quercus robur).
