On September 29, 1609, while in attendance during sankin kotai duty in Edo, he attended a tea ceremony held by Mizuno Tadatane, which was also attended by the hatamoto Kume Saheiji and Hattori Hanhachirō.
During the Edo period, the Tōkaidō developed as the major highway linking Edo with Kyoto, and daimyo from the western domains were forced to travel on a regular basis to Edo to attend to the Shogun in a system known as sankin kōtai.
King Louis XIV of France instituted a similar practice upon the completion of his Palace at Versailles, requiring the French nobility, particularly the ancient Noblesse d'épée (nobility of the sword) to spend six months of each year at the palace, for reasons similar to those of the Japanese shoguns.
