Axial Seamount, a seamount and submarine volcano off the coast of Oregon
Axial Seamount was first detected in the 1970s by satellite altimetry, and mapped and explored by Pisces IV, DSV Alvin, and others through the 1980s.
The bighead spurdog has only been recorded from the waters south of New Caledonia, and from seamounts on the Norfolk Ridge in the northern Tasman Sea.
Overfishing (as in the rate of depletion) at the Cross seamount appeared to be quite high, causing concerns.
Scientific data on the water currents and food availability of the seamount was collected, as was information on the age and growth patterns of the corals themselves.
The seamount is composed of gabbros of the oceanic crust, serpentized rocks and alkaline basalts.
Features of the Rockall Plateau have been officially named after features of Middle-earth in the fiction of J. R. R. Tolkien, e.g. Eriador Seamount, Rohan Seamount, Gondor Seamount, Fangorn Bank, Edoras Bank, Lorien Knoll, Isengard Ridge.
The saddled swellshark is found off the eastern coast of Australia, as far north as Rockingham Bay in Queensland and as far south as Tathra in New South Wales, and perhaps also the Britannia Seamount near Brisbane.
The series took place at Sealab, an underwater research base based on the Challenger Seamount (an underwater mountain), in the year 2020 (48 years in the future at the time of broadcast).
The individuals in the NOAA image are adults of 2 cm (0.75 in) living on rock surfaces at a hydrothermal vent at the East Diamante seamount, which is westsouthwest of the small island of Farallon de Medinilla in the Southern Seamount Province of the Mariana Islands.
