This sloboda occupied the beginning of Staraya Basmannaya Street, while the present-day Novaya Basmannaya Street was known as Kapitanskaya (Captain's) sloboda and housed the officers of "European" troops established by Peter I. Church of St. Peter and Paul in this area was built in 1705–1723 to the draft made by Peter himself, in early Baroque style (the church technically stands in Krasnoselsky District).

The district contains Kursky Rail Terminal, historical areas of Khitrovka, Clean Ponds, Red Gates (shared with Krasnoselsky District), German Quarter and Basmannaya Sloboda.
On July 1, 2010, FK Sevojno Point merged with FK Sloboda Užice and they agreed to play under a new name, FK Sloboda Point Sevojno.
FK Sloboda Tuzla was founded in 1919, as a part of the Labour Sport Society Gorki, named after the great socialist Russian poet Maxim Gorky.

Because of the discontinuation of several other Tuzla football clubs, like Obilić nad Bura, many players transferred to Sloboda and in 1928 it had a formidable team that consisted of the following players: Asim Mulaosmanović, Muho Mujeznović, Dejan Vujasinović, Mujko Mešković, Meša Selimović, Abdurahman Mujezinović Smrt, Vlado Mileusnić, Karlo Mot, Ivan Majer and others.
In his debut season in the highest men's basketball competition in Serbia, the BC Sloboda has been ranked 9th, with 12 wins and 14 defeats.

In 2013 the BC Sloboda achieved a big success in recent club history gaining spot in the Radivoj Korać Cup quarterfinal against Serbian powerhouse Partizan Belgrade.
The launcher is produced by Eurokompozit of Prilep, Macedonia, while the anti-tank rocket is produced by Sloboda of Cacak, Serbia.
He made his professional debut for Sloboda on 27 April 2013, in Serbian SuperLiga match versus FK Rad.
Relja Obrenović joined Rambo Amadeus' backing band, and appeared as perforer on the album Hoćemo gusle, released in 1989, and in 2007 he appeared as guest on the Partibrejkers studio album Sloboda ili ništa.
When Peter I established his new capital city in Saint Petersburg, this court sloboda depopulated, and the street was re-settled by nobles again, housing families including Gagarin, Golitsyn, Suvorov and the court of Peter's sister, princess Natalya Alexeevna (1673–1716).
