Music is a large part of the Indo-Caribbean American community, which includes the tunes of Bollywood, Carnatic music, bhajans, chutney music, soca (Indo-Caribbeans participate in Miami Carnival and Labor Day Carnival in huge numbers), parang, steel pan, tassa, calypso, and dancehall.
Laventille is also the place where steel pan was born, and it is the birthplace of innovators and world renowned tuners like the late Rudolph Charles, Bertie Marshall and Roland Harrigin.
Though the traditional Chanté mas and Lapo kabrit declined in popularity due to imported calypso and steel pan music, several villages on Dominica, such as Grand Bay, has preserved the unique Dominican tradition.
