The collapse of the Caliphate of Córdoba allowed them to found the Taifa of Zaragoza, which they ruled from 1018 until they were expelled by a rival dynasty, the Banu Hud, in 1039.
During the first three decades of this period (1018–1038) the city was ruled by the Banu Tujibi.

Built during the tenth century by the Banu Hud dynasty of the Taifa of Zaragoza, Aragonese forces captured the castle in 1089 when it was conquered by Sancho Ramírez.
He was succeeded by Al-Mamun, who asked Ferdinand I of León and Castile for assistance against Al-Mustain I of the taifa of Zaragoza; twenty years later Toledo was attacked by Ferdinand himself, and was forced to pay tribute to escape the menace.
