After an initial residency at The Alfred Hospital, Gust was appointed as a pathology registrar at the Fairfield Infectious Diseases Hospital, Melbourne, Australia; then spending two years in the United Kingdom at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and the WHO Regional Virus Laboratory in Glasgow.
During his lifetime, the Charity's that the Ilhan Food Allergy Foundation was able to contribute towards include: the Richmond Football Club, Kids Under Cover, The Alfred Hospital Department of Allergy, Immunology and Respiratory Medicine, and Murdoch Children's Research Institute Allergy and Immune Disorders Research Group Department of Allergy and Immunology.
He has been heavily involved in the preservation and restoration of heritage sites, including Mawson's Huts, in Antarctica and sat on a number of prominent charity boards including the Alfred Hospital, Breast Cancer Network, Australian Koala Foundation and the Australian Childhood Foundation.
