The church’s striking spire, with a Viking ship weathervane on top, has been described as ’a miniature replica of the Eiffel Tower’.
In 1634, Juan Vitrián de Viamonte added a watchtower with a weathervane sculpted in the form of a woman, by Gerónimo Martín Pinzón, an artist from Havana, and based on the figure crowning La Giralda in Seville.
More recently, the town appeared as the setting for the thriller novel Aztec Love Song (Weathervane Press 2009, ISBN 978-0-9562193-2-9) by Marty Ross, a Scottish author best known for his BBC radio plays who grew up in the town and studied at Mearns Castle High School.
In 2008, Philadelphia record producer Brian McTear (Matt Pond PA, MeWithoutYou, Marissa Nadler, Dr. Dog and The Dead Milkmen) founded Weathervane Music with friend and musician Bill Robertson.
