Infectious bacteria of the species Vibrio shiloi are the bleaching agent of Oculina patagonica in the Mediterranean Sea, causing this effect by attacking the zooxanthellae.
It is prone to bleaching, when a coral expels its zooxanthellae under stressful conditions, to black band disease, and to white plague.
Some species of nudibranchs such as Pteraeolidia ianthina sequester whole living symbiotic zooxanthellae within their digestive diverticula, and thus they also manage to be "solar-powered".
