He then became organist and choirmaster of St Matthew's Church, Northampton 1964 - 1971 before becoming organist and master of choristers at Norwich Cathedral.
The cantata was commissioned by the Revd Canon Walter Hussey for the celebration of the fiftieth anniversary of the consecration of St Matthew's Church, Northampton.
Hudson was educated at St Matthew's School and then Lawrence Sheriff School, where his interest in geology was started through a schoolmaster taking the students fossil hunting in the strata used for cement making.
The Anglican community also established their own church in the suburb: St Matthew's Church was founded on 21 September 1860 by Sarah Waldegrave, Countess Waldegrave.

The Reverend Benjamin Glennie had a plan to establish the (then) Church of England on the Darling Downs through four churches in the larger towns named after the four apostles: Matthew, Mark, Luke and John.
Inside the church there is a wide gallery around three sides and in the west end is a Doric organ case.
It was a small octagonal mud-brick church, hastily built on land donated by Governor James Stirling on his Woodbridge estate, next to where Guildford Grammar School now stands.
Built in 1840, the church is known for its glass-work by René Lalique.
These works included Gerald Finzi's Lo, the Full, Final Sacrifice (1946), and later Benjamin Britten’s Rejoice in the Lamb and Leonard Bernstein’s Chichester Psalms when his career took him to Chichester Cathedral.

St Matthew's was built by the Phipps family as a memorial to Mr Pickering Phipps (1836-1890), the head of Phipps Brewery in Bridge Street, Northampton.
It is now surrounded by the Devonshire Quarter of Sheffield, an area of independent retail outlets, pubs and bars with a large student population.

There are three main stained glass windows, the east window which dates from 1886 depicts the Incarnation and includes St Matthew and other saints in its design.

The altar and reredos are also by Sedding with carvings by Frank Tory and a centrepiece painting of the Adoration by Nathaniel Westlake.
It was paid for by Colonel Henry Blundell, owner of the Pemberton Colliery, in memory of his wife, Beatrice who had died in 1884.
Responsibility for the school is shared between the parish and All Souls Church in Harlesden.
In recent years, St Matthew's has held civic memorial services for the victims of AIDS and the Air New Zealand Flight 901 disaster on Mount Erebus.
It is, statistically, the most deprived neighbourhood in Leicester today and the most income deprived neighbourhood in England (Indices of deprivation 2007).
It was sculpted by Guy Reid, a former Artist in Residence at St Matthew’s, and has a real theological intensity.
