In the hour before kick-off, the crowd was entertained by the bands of the Royal Engineers and the Chatham Naval Dockyard.

Peter Hodge had agreed to join the club as manager well in advance of the final, but was unable to take up the position until his previous club Leicester City completed their league fixtures.

Consequently, Bolton entered the match as favourites and, as expected, went on to win, their single goal being scored by David Jack.
