Stephan's areas of specialization include interdisciplinary archaeological research in the first and second millennia A.D., medieval settlement and landscape archaeology, urban topography and architectural history, renaissance material culture (especially ceramics, glass, and oven tiles), economic history (especially pottery, metallurgy and glass production), and archaeometry.
In the course of the 1st millennium CE Jewish scholars developed an elaborate system of Seven Heavens, their names being Vilon (וילון, also called "arafel"), Raki'a (רקיע), Shehaqim (שחקים), Zebul (זבול), Ma'on (מעון), Machon (מכון), and Araboth (ערבות), where ofanim, the seraphim, and the hayyoth and the throne of the Lord are located.

The region received its name after the Severians, an East Slavic tribe which inhabited the territory in the late 1st millennium A.D. Their main settlements included the present-day cities of Novhorod-Siverskyi, Chernihiv (Chernigov), Putyvl (Putivl), Hlukhiv (Glukhov), Liubech, Kursk, Rylsk, Starodub, Trubchevsk, Sevsk, Bryansk, and Belgorod.
