It was the 123rd edition (for the men) and the 111th (for the women) of the Canadian Open, and was part of the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 of the 2012 ATP World Tour, and of the WTA Premier 5 tournaments of the 2012 WTA Tour.
However, regular success has been hard to come by in recent times, with Ivanovic being unable to beat top ten players on a regular basis and having not won a title, let alone reached a final, since November 2011, and having suffered many heavy defeats along the way (Ivanovic has suffered five 6–0 set losses since July 2012, including a double-bagel loss at the 2012 Rogers Cup).
