1st Army Tank Brigade (New Zealand) (1941–42, broken up to provide personnel and equipment for the 4th New Zealand Armoured Brigade, New Zealand 2nd Division)
The Brigade arrived in Italy on 5 October 1943, landing at Taranto and were involved in the first actions to break through the Bernhardt Line on the Sangro front.

Stewart then took over command of the 4th Armoured Brigade while its nominal commander, Brigadier Lindsay Inglis, was on furlough in New Zealand.
