56th Field Artillery Command

The third tactical battalion was deployed in May 1965 as the 3rd Bn, 84th FA to a headquarters in Neckarsulm, West Germany.

An investigation revealed that the Kevlar rocket bottle had accumulated a triboelectric charge in the cold dry weather; as the engine was removed from the container the electrical charge began to flow and created a hot spot that ignited the propellant.

They were the first of three tactical nuclear battalions to fall under the 56th Field Artillery Group in command structure.

Mutlangen

The Mutlanger Heide, a heathland nearby, was the site of a US military base for Pershing II missiles, which were assigned to the 56th Field Artillery Command headquartered in nearby Schwäbisch Gmünd.
