96th Regiment of Foot, raised as the Minorca Regiment in 1798, given the name 97th (Queen's Own Germans) in 1805, and renumbered as the 96th in 1816
The regiment distinguished itself even further, when Private Antoine Lutz left the ranks under his own initiative to seize the colour of the 21st Demi Brigade Legère, which had been captured previously by the 42nd Royal Highland Regiment (later The Black Watch) before being recaptured during the cavalry attack.
He was the son of Festus Kelly (c. 1759 – 7 Oct. 1839) country Galway, formerly a captain in the 96th Regiment of Foot (or perhaps 69th).
