In February 1903, he was arrested at the house of Rev. C. H. Chapin in Hancock, New Hampshire.

Ames received many awards including a Fulbright Grant (1984), fellowships from the American Institute of Indian Studies (1985), the Portuguese Ministry of Education (1986), and the Callous Kentuckian Foundation of Lisbon (2002).
He rose to become the CIA's chief analyst for the area and was killed in the suicide bombing of the US Embassy in Beirut, 18 April 1983.
