Julian eventually moved to Orange County, CA in 1981 with his father and graduated from Sonora High School in 1987 where he excelled in mathematics and science, and was selected to participate in various scholastic competitions, including the Science Olympiad and the Academic Decathlon.
Extra curricular activities at the middle and high school levels include, basketball, football, softball, baseball, cross country, track, volleyball, dance, cheerleading, wrestling, Science Olympiad, FFA, Academic Decathlon, quiz bowl, student council, National Honors Society, drama club, art club, FCCLA, FBLA, glee club, and yearbook.
In 2006 team placed first at the Idaho Academic Decathlon State Competition and traveled to San Antonio for the national finals, placing 17th overall and earning the title "Rookie of the Year" for a division II school.
