They were part of a small band of urbane young bachelor colonists who in 1838 were among the foundation members of the South Australian Club, precursor to the Adelaide Club.
He later became one of the founders and a trustee of the Adelaide Club, where a portrait of him still hangs today.

Prior to her election, Joyce Steele was a homemaker, an ABC broadcaster and active in community organisations, including the Queen Adelaide Club (the women's equivalent of the restricted Adelaide Club).
