The first of these contests, held in January 1918, led to the Fokker D.VII winning the competition and going on to become one of Germany's most feared planes.

A second competition in May and June led to the acceptance of several of the main contest entries, the Pfalz D.XII, Fokker E.V, Junkers D.I and Siemens-Schuckert D.IV, the later of which is considered by many to be Germany's best design of the war.

Albatros, Fokker, Rumpler and Wright made Adlershof-Johannisthal famous.
Several large scale facilities are available, the most important of which are the 10 MW BER-II research reactor at the Lise Meitner campus in Wannsee and the 3rd generation BESSY synchrotron in Adlershof.
This included most of the entries in the First Fighter Competition at Adlershof in January 1918, notably the famed Fokker D.VII.
In the context of DLR's initiatives to promote young research talent, ten DLR School Labs were set up in Berlin-Adlershof, Braunschweig, Bremen, Cologne-Porz, Dortmund, Göttingen, Hamburg-Harburg, Lampoldshausen/Stuttgart, Neustrelitz, and Oberpfaffenhofen over the past years.
The D.VIII was also adapted to triplane configuration as the Pfalz Dr.I for entry in the First Fighter Competition at Adlershof in January 1918.
The headquarters of the Kasernierte Volkspolizei (the militarised unit of the East German police, which was transformed in 1956 into the National People's Army) was moved in June 1954 from Berlin-Adlershof to Strausberg, because Berlin had been declared a demilitarised zone by the four occupying powers.
The existence of technology centers at Adlershof dates back well into the late 19th and early 20th centuries - the Berlin–Görlitz railway had reached the Berlin suburb of Adlershof in 1867 and the population increased from 743 in 1875 to 5591 in 1895 following the industrialization in the area.
