This type of span, which is known variously as an aerial transfer, ferry, or transporter bridge, had first been demonstrated in Bilbao's Vizcaya Bridge in 1893 and one in France in 1898.
The museum is located near the Aerial Lift Bridge in Duluth, Minnesota and overlooks the entrance to the Duluth-Superior harbor.
In the United States, only two transporter bridges were ever built: the Aerial Lift Bridge in Duluth, Minnesota in 1905, and the Sky Ride.
However, when visitors to the area come to see bridges, they pay much more attention to the historic Aerial Lift Bridge that serves as a gateway to the port.
