De Mille began her association with the fledgling American Ballet Theatre (then called the Ballet Theatre) in 1939, but her first significant work, Rodeo (1942) with the score by Aaron Copland, was staged for the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo.

On the strength of Rodeo, de Mille was hired to choreograph the musical show Oklahoma! (1943).

Besides Rodeo, two other de Mille ballets are performed on a regular basis, Three Virgins and a Devil (1934) adapted from a tale by Giovanni Boccaccio, and Fall River Legend (1948) based on the life of Lizzie Borden.

Marina was a featured artist in the Broadway revival production of "Brigadoon" under the direction of Vivian Matalon and Agnes de Mille.
She married the German-born film director Curtis Bernhardt in 1936 and moved with him to the United States in 1938, where she performed in several Broadway musicals including One Touch of Venus (1943) by Kurt Weill and Agnes de Mille, but chose not to pursue her film career.
The opera debuted in the United States on Broadway at the Ziegfeld Theatre in a production staged by Agnes de Mille which opened on 29 December 1948 and closed on 15 January 1949 after 23 performances.
