In 2000, the ancient city of Helike (sometimes called "The Lost Atlantis") was discovered: it had been buried by an earthquake and tsunami in 373 B.C. Archeologists are excavating the site.

The building of the museum which originally housed the municipal market of Aigio is a work of the famous architect Ernst Ziller and it was built in 1890.
He went to school in Aigio and Patras, went through military service in the 5/42 Evzone Regiment and was then appointed head of the customs office at Eretria (then called Nea Psara).
