Allen was born Deborah Lynn Thurmond in Memphis, Tennessee and was strongly influenced by Elvis Presley, Roy Orbison, Aretha Franklin, Al Green, Ray Charles, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin and the current music which was being played in Memphis on WHBQ and WDIA, as well as country greats such as Brenda Lee, Patsy Cline, Tammy Wynette, Dolly Parton, Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings and Johnny Cash.
As well as producing and songwriting for numerous other artists such as Al Green, Montell Jordan,Ray J, Kurupt,Sisqo,Mariah Carey,Tank, and Justin Bieber.
His influences are largely soul/funk but also include: Eddie Kendricks, Isaac Hayes, Candi Staton, Otis Redding, Elvis Presley, Zapp, The Stylistics, O'Jays, Bill Withers, Lyrics Born, Sparlha Swa, Slave, Midnight Star, Stevie Wonder (pre-1980), Al Green, etc.
She has toured and/or recorded with numerous artists including Quincy Jones, Jon Secada, Liza Minnelli, Al Green, Sandi Patti, Jon Hendricks, Donna Summer, Michael McDonald, Celia Cruz, Rita Marley, and has been a featured soloist with the Memphis Symphony and the South Florida Pops.
Ironically, after the disappointing performance of singles from the album, the band then released a new cover version of the Al Green classic "Tired of Being Alone", which returned them to the UK Top 20.
