Since his departure from management with Grimsby in 2008, Buckley who continues to live in the area is often the co-commentator and guest pundit for BBC Radio Humberside's coverage of Grimsby Town games.

His other son Adam did however feature in the Football League playing in just under 50 league appearances combined for both Grimsby Town and Lincoln City before going on to feature for a number of clubs at a semi-professional level.
Albion were promoted in 1993, but Shakespeare moved to Grimsby Town, rejoining Alan Buckley under whom he had played at Walsall.

When manager Alan Buckley was sacked in September 2000, he was replaced by Lennie Lawrence who in turn brought in midfielders Menno Willems, Knut Anders Fostervold, Neil Murray and most notably Leicester City youngster Stuart Campbell.
On 22 March 2001 he became Alan Buckley's first signing for Lincoln City when the Sincil Bank based club agreed to take over his contract until the end of the season.
