Alan is listed as one of the 16 men who counseled King John regarding the Magna Carta.

A series of castles were built, and much of what are now counties Antrim, Londonderry and Tyrone were granted to Ailean Alan, Lord of Galloway (or "King of the Gall-Gaidhil"), his brother Tomás Mac Uchtraigh and their cousin Donnchadh of Carrick.

It was once suggested to have been commissioned by Alan of Galloway for his wedding in 1209, since Alan was the descendant of Fergus, who ruled Galloway as king in the mid-twelfth century.
