Between 2008 and 2011 Kotlowitz worked with documentary production studio Kartemquin Films and Hoop Dreams director Steve James as a producer on the documentary The Interrupters, which debuted at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2011 to widespread critical acclaim.
It is the setting for the documentary film Legacy as well as the non-fiction book There Are No Children Here: The Story of Two Boys Growing Up in the Other America by Alex Kotlowitz.
This effort resonated with the perspectives shared in Alex Kotlowitz' There Are No Children Here, Nicholas Lemann's 'The Promised Land—both of them best sellers—and MacArthur Genius awardee William Julius Wilson's groundbreaking, The Truly Disadvantaged.
