She is the daughter of David Cecil, 6th Marquess of Exeter, then known as Lord Burghley, and his second wife Diana Henderson, granddaughter of Alexander Henderson, 1st Baron Faringdon.

Born in Colchester, Fairfax County, Virginia to successful merchant Alexander Henderson, Archibald Henderson was commissioned a second lieutenant in the Marine Corps on 4 June 1806 and served aboard USS Constitution during his famous victories in the War of 1812.
Born Eric Brand Henderson on 26 September 1884 at Norwood Green in Middlesex, the son of Alexander and Jane Henderson, his father was a stock broker.
