Cockburn Tower

In about 1527, William Cockburn purchased the land from Alexander Lindsay, 4th Earl of Crawford.


Alexander Lindsay, 1st Lord Spynie

On 18 November 1599 he had to promise the council to present Sir Walter Lindsay of Balgavie, a papal emissary, before the presbytery of Edinburgh, and was ordered to reside where they directed him until he satisfied them in reference to his religion.

The manuscript collections (including Chinese and Japanese printed books) were sold in 1901 to Enriqueta Augustina Rylands for the John Rylands Library.

Joseph Bampfield

When Lord Balcarres, in 1653, began to put into operation a scheme for a rising in the Highlands, Bampfield made his way to Scotland and again sought out Anne Murray, who had always given him credit for believing that his wife was dead.
