It was the first Guppy aircraft to feature upgraded Allison 501-D22C turboprop engines.
Allison started as an engine and car "hot rodding" company servicing the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in Indianapolis.
•
On January 1, 1917 Allison moved into a building at what in later years was to become the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
•
In the late 1920s the United States Army funded the development of a series of high-power engines, as part of its hyper engine series, which it intended to produce on Continental Motors' production lines.
•
The Army was once again uninterested, but instead suggested Allison try selling it to the United States Navy.
The result was the V1710 12-cylinder aircraft engine and it made the company, now known as the Allison Engine Company, a major force in aviation.
Other differences compared with the MD 520N include a new six blade main rotor (the MD 520N has a five blade unit) and a more powerful Allison (now Rolls-Royce) Model 250 turboshaft.
The Allison Advanced Development Company (also known as LibertyWorks) was established in 1995 as a result of Rolls-Royce plc's acquisition of the Allison Engine Company.
•
The most significant part of Rolls-Royce North America is Rolls-Royce Corporation, formerly the Allison Engine Company.
