In December 1903, Olantigh was occupied by Wanley Elias Sawbridge-Erle-Drax, vicar of Almer, Dorset, when fire gutted the Georgian mansion.
As a result, Whymper hired the services of Christian Almer, who had been with Alfred Wills on the Wetterhorn in 1854.
The mountain was first climbed on 25 June 1864 by A. W. Moore, Horace Walker and Edward Whymper with the guides Michel Croz, Christian Almer the elder, and Christian Almer the younger.

He transferred the family seat from Almer to Pant Iocyn (now Pant-yr-Ochain), a house he rebuilt between Gresford and Wrexham using materials salvaged from his previous home.

Edward Almer or Aylmer (by 1516-1574 or later), of Denbigh and Gresford, Denbighshire, was a Welsh politician.
The two climbed together for over ten seasons, and were joined in many of their adventures by Tschingel, (1865 – 1879), a small dog their guide Christian Almer gave to her nephew.
The northwest ridge was first ascended in 1865 by the Rev. James John Hornby, Rev. Thomas Henry Philpot, with guides Christian and Ulrich Almer, Johann Bischof and Christian Lauener.
