When Joseph Smith moved church headquarters to Caldwell County, Missouri in 1837, Cutler followed him there and settled in adjacent Ray County.
Clitherall was founded in 1864 by members of the Church of Jesus Christ (Cutlerite), a small Latter Day Saint faction started in 1853 by Alpheus Cutler, a former associate of Joseph Smith, Jr., founder of the original Latter Day Saint church in 1830.
Among those settlers was Emily Trask Cutler, one of the plural wives of Heber C. Kimball, counselor to Young and daughter of John Alpheus Cutler, who founded the Cutlerite sect at Manti, Iowa while en route with the main body to the Salt Lake Valley.
