Pilbeam cars have been exceptionally successful in hillclimbing, dominating the 1980s and early 1990s; they were the choice of 17 British Hill Climb Championship winners between 1977 and 1996, powering such drivers as Andy Priaulx and Roy Lane.

Andy Priaulx and BMW Team UK won the ETCC in 2004, and continued the winning form in WTCC in 2005 in an E46 3 Series, while the E90 3 Series repeated this feat in 2006 and 2007.
The BMW 320 TC is the further development of the BMW 320si WTCC, with which Andy Priaulx won the World Touring Car Championship for BMW in 2006 and 2007.
