Lee-Hamilton lived with his mother and step-father in Florence, Italy, during his illness, and it was only after his mother died in 1896 and he recovered that he was able to travel again, eventually marrying the novelist Annie E. Holdsworth in 1898 and fathering a child, Persis Margaret, in 1903, but she died of meningitis in infancy.

In response, Pino approached UNC alumna, Annie E. Clark, who also was allegedly mistreated, and began to research Title IX, a federal legislation which grants students the right to an education without sex discrimination, and the Clery Act which grants protections for sexual assault victims on college campuses.
