He is a grandson of Alfred Wiener, founder of the Wiener Library and a brother of the peer Daniel Finkelstein OBE, Executive Editor of The Times and of Tamara Finkelstein, Director of Public Services at HM Treasury.

In 2009 he received the Oliver Lodge Medal of the IET for achievement in Information Technology.

He was appointed in 2013 as a Member of Council of the UK Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council by the Minister for Universities and Science, David Willetts, MP.
