The Capillitas Mine is a rich source of Rhodochrosite, (Inca Rosa), as well as 87 other types of mineral, including Catamarcaite, which is named after the Province of Catamarca.
The department is most famous for its volcanic activity, there are over 200 volcanos situated in the area, the most notable of them are Antofagasta, Antofalla, Carachi Pampa, Alumbrera and Galán.
