Her parents had married in 1918, but were divorced in 1928, after her mother, the daughter of an Italian lieutenant-general, Conte Michele Salazar (descendant of a Spanish nobleman from the times of the Spanish presence in Italy), left her 66-year-old father for a 27-year-old army officer, William Carr.

They later retired to Ferniehirst Castle, near Jedburgh, after passing the other houses to their sons.
The Lunch was founded in 1955 by Antonella Kerr, Marchioness of Lothian (OBE), Odette Hallowes, and Lady Georgina Coleridge (all now deceased) to bring together outstanding women from all walks of life, creating one of the most significant assemblies of women in the world in recognition of their individual achievements.
