The Aq Qoyunlu Turkomans first acquired land in 1402, when Timur granted them all of Diyar Bakr in present-day Turkey.
By the year 1456, Mehmed the Conqueror (Bora Ayanoğlu) has decided to extend the borders of his empire to the east, at the lands of the Aq Qoyunlu.
February 4 – Battle of Qarabagh in Arran (Caucasus): The Aq Qoyunlu under Uzun Hassan defeat the Timurids of Samarkand under Abu Sa'id Mirza resulting in the latter's capture and execution (by Yadgar Muhammad Mirza) and abandonment of Timurid claims on Persia.
As Muhamed Amin Zaki in his book, A Short History of the Kurds and Kurdistan, during regional conflicts between Kara Koyunlu and Aq Qoyunlu, the Mukri kurds gained power in the fertile valleys of south of Lake Urmia.
