3 unusual facts about Arm architecture

ARM architecture

In the late 1980s Apple Computer and VLSI Technology started working with Acorn on newer versions of the ARM core.

They chose VLSI Technology as the silicon partner, as they were a source of ROMs and custom chips for Acorn.

SiRF

The chips are based on ARM controllers integrated with low-noise radio receivers to decode GPS signals at very low signal levels (typically -160dBm).

Advanced Technology Investment Company

In August 2010, the firm joined with other investors to fund Texas-based Calxeda, a start-up company for producing ARM architecture-based computers for the server market.

Architecture for Control Networks

E1.31 (Streaming DMX over ACN) is supported on Linux (ARM; i386, x86-64), and Macintosh (PowerPC; i386, x86-64) by the Open Lighting Architecture.

Bodhi Linux

The hard float application binary interface of the ARM11, a 32-bit RISC microprocessor ARM architecture with ARMv6 architectural additions, provides enormous performance gains for many use cases.

Calao Systems

Devices use an Atmel or a Nomadik processor (based on ARM architecture) and usually offer about 128MB of RAM (up to 1GB for the most advanced models).

ECos

eCos runs on a wide variety of hardware platforms, including ARM, CalmRISC, FR-V, Hitachi H8, IA-32, Motorola 68000, Matsushita AM3x, MIPS, NEC V8xx, Nios II, PowerPC, SPARC, and SuperH.

James G. Mitchell

He was head of research and development for Acorn Computers (U.K.), where he managed the development of the first ARM RISC chip and was President of the Acorn Research Centre in Palo Alto, California.

Joint Test Action Group

ARM-based products have a particularly rich third party market, and a number of those vendors have expanded to non-ARM platforms like MIPS and PowerPC.

NaN

most processors (including those of the Intel/AMD x86-32/x86-64 family, the Motorola 68000 family, the AIM PowerPC family, the ARM family, and the Sun SPARC family) set the signaled/quiet bit to non-zero if the NaN is quiet, and to zero if the NaN is signaling.

Object Pascal

Currently, FPC can generate code for x86, x86-64, PowerPC, SPARC, and ARM processors, and for various operating systems, including Microsoft Windows, Linux, FreeBSD, Mac OS and Mac OS X (with an Xcode integration kit).

ObjectWeb Think

Think comes along with KORTEX, a library of already existing system components, implementing various functions on various targets (e.g. ARM, PowerPC, x86, Hitachi H8, AVR).

Operating System Embedded

The Enea OSE family of RTOS features 3 OSs: OSE for ARM processors, PowerPC and MIPS, OSEck for various DSP's, and OSE Epsilon for minimal devices, written in pure assembly.

Phoenix-RTOS

It was designed to run mainly on x86-based computers, but ports for ARM and PowerPC microprocessor architectures are under development (alpha versions for ARM7 TDMI core and PowerPC Open Firmware based architectures are available).

The Portland Group

PGI has more recently participated in the specification of the new standard OpenACC directives for GPU computing, and has released a compiler for the OpenCL language on multi-core ARM processors.

Trango Virtual Processors

Trango developed a mobile hypervisor that supported ARM architectures (ARMv5 and ARMv6) and MIPS architectures, and could run Symbian OS, WinCE, and Linux mobile operating systems, and a supporting integrated development environment (IDE).
