It considers itself the successor of the Communist Party of Armenia of the Soviet Union, since the former leadership of this party, headed by Aram Gasparovich Sarkisyan, dissolved it and established the Democratic Party of Armenia.

It should not be confused with the historical Communist Party of Armenia during the Soviet era, nor with Armenian Communist Party of the new independent Republic of Armenia and its follow-up Democratic Party of Armenia.

Renewed Communist Party of Armenia - (in Armenian: Հայաստանի նորացված կոմունիստական կուսակցություն Hayastani Noratsvats Komunistakan Kusaktsutyun) abbreviated HNKK, formed on May 25, 2002, by former Armenian Communist Party (HKK) leaders Yuri Manukian and Grant Voskanyan who had been expelled from HKK the previous year on the grounds that they had advocated cooperation with the government.
At the end of the war, after Germany's capitulation, many Armenians in both the Republic, including Armenian Communist Party First Secretary Grigor Harutyunyan (Arutyunov), and the diaspora lobbied Stalin to reconsider the issue of taking back the provinces of Kars, Iğdır, and Ardahan, which Armenia had lost to Turkey in the Treaty of Kars.
