Macalister was appointed to the positions of clerk of Petty Sessions and postmaster at Scone, New South Wales in June 1840.

When Charles Lilley became Premier in November 1868, Macalister took office as Secretary for Public Lands and Works, and for the goldfields.
He was then taken to the small administrative outpost of Somerset, at the tip of Cape York, from where a report of his discovery was sent to the Colonial Secretary, Arthur Macalister.
The origin of the suburb name is from the name given to the residence of Arthur Macalister, a Scottish migrant who became the second Premier of Queensland.
