The place is named after Fyodor Sergeyev (nom de guerre Artem or Artyom), and for a time in honor of the 26 Baku Commissars.
Construction also began on two airfields; a hydro-airport (seaplane port) in Vladivostok's Second River region and another named Ozernye Klyuchi (Lake Springs/Озерные Ключи), (which is now part of the current Vladivostok International Airport) near Artyom.
