On December 30, 1989, he and the famous mountain climber Reinhold Messner were the first to reach the South Pole without animal or motorised help, on skis, and with wind-assistance (parasail).
Two other individuals, Arved Fuchs and Oliver Pitras, have done it twice as part of a crew.
In May 2007, he joined under one of his company initiated "Awakening Tour" together with Arved Fuchs, during which he opined about economic polices he would like to see instituted in Europe.
