1997 in Japanese television

December 16-Denno Senshi Porygon,an episode of Pokémon,is aired on TV Tokyo in Japan.20 minutes in the episode, Ash Ketchum's Pikachu uses its Thunderbolt attack on vaccine missiles,causing red and blue strobe lights flashing rapidly.This gives 685 viewers (310 boys and 375 girls) seizures and causes Indigo League (The series of Pokémon) to go into hiatus until April 1998.

Ash Ketchum

His name is derived from the Japanese name (as the letters 'ash' are included in 'Satoshi') and his English motto, "Gotta Catch 'Em All". Ash's dream is to become a Pokémon Master. He is loosely based on Red, the protagonist from the Generation I games Pokémon Red, Green, Blue and Yellow, as well as the Generation III games Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen versions.

Ninetales

Many other Ninetales have made minor appearances such as one being used by Blaine to battle Ash in their Gym battle.


Ekans and Arbok

IGN's Pokémon Chick wrote that Arbok was a favorite among players looking for a "pure Poison" type and/or players who like Arbok for being an enemy toward Pikachu and Ash Ketchum in the Pokémon anime.

Espeon and Umbreon

In the anime, Ash Ketchum's rival Gary Oak owns an Umbreon, which evolved sometime prior to the episode Power Play where it was shown to be battling an Alakazam, and had proved itself to be a strong battler.
